Rocky Bridge Creek is located about 16 km south of Neville. Precious opal was discovered in the district as early as 1875 being the first discovery in NSW. The opal fills spherical cavities (averaging 5mm in diameter) in a 9m thick vesicular basalt flow of Tertiary age. Most of the opal is blue-grey or milky white potch, while the rarer precious variety is semi transparent and displays an attractive colour play usually green-blue but also with flashes of red. Unusual the stones are too small to be cut, but some larger stones (up to about 15mm across) have been recovered and although rather milky, display a fine colour play. Although the basalt is highly weathered the opal can generally only be extracted with great difficulty.

Some quality opals were recovered between 1920 and 1926 but returns were small. An adit about 9m long and some small pits are the only workings on the deposit. (Mineral Industry NSW Gemstones No.18 @ns ED MacNevin & GG Holmes)
